Sir
Knight John Timmermans was an active member of Airdrie Council # 8045
and a member of Father Doucet Assembly # 0006. SK John was born on June
2, 1952 in Vlymen, Holland and passed away on February 4, 1996 at the
early age of 43 leaving behind a loving family and many friends.
John joined the Knights of Columbus in 1983. He was very proud to be a
Knight. He was a Past Grand Knight of Council 8045 and achieved State
Grand Knight of the Year as well as Council of the Year during his term.
He was very instrumental in forming the council’s First Degree Team,
which is still active today.
John was employed with Alberta Agriculture, Soil Conservation for
approximately 12 years. He was a very active member of St. Paul's Parish
as a lector at mass; he was involved with building the Church and was a
member of the Parish Council.
In
the Community he was very active with his children with the Nose Creek
Swim Club and their annual Swim Meet which was originally sponsored by
the Knights of Columbus Airdrie Council 8045 and he always ensured that
there was a 4th Degree Honor Guard at the Opening Ceremonies. Following
his death it was renamed to the John G. Timmermans Memorial Swim Meet.
He
was very instrumental in the formation of the Airdrie Separate School
Board and Airdrie's first Catholic School, Our Lady Queen of Peace
Elementary/Junior & Senior High School. The new playground was dedicated
in his memory, as he was instrumental in its construction.
His
involvement with the Knights and the Community during his short life was
exemplary. He truly lived the principles of our Order and provided
service to Church, Community, Council, Family and Youth.
His
ultimate dream was to form an Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights in
Airdrie and for this reason it was found fitting to name
this assembly as a memorial to him. His widow Wendy Timmermans was
overjoyed of the name selection and has consented to its use.
